Great Yarmouth 1953 flood, Ariel Photograph
This ariel photograph was taken after the peak of the 1953 flood. It is a very scratched and poor quality thin negative, this is as much as I can get from it. The tidal surge that was on its way at the moment I posted this photo on 9th Nov 2007 was said to be as large as the 1953 surge. It was 1.45am and the first road in Yarmouth had just been closed due to flooding and there was another 5-6 hours to peak high tide. People were out sight seeing at the with young children in Gt Yarmouth. I wondered what Great Yarmouth would look like in the morning. I am glad to say the flooding of Gt Yarmouth on that occasion was light and just a reminder of what could still happen. I have posted a photograph of Gt Yarmouth after the 1953 Flood to show what happened then.
I live in Mid Norfolk, I do not live on the coast anymore, but I grew up on it. I stayed up to hear what happening as the night went on in Nov 2007. My farther Billy Bishop took part in a well known rescue at Cley – on – Sea in 1953. He died aged 96 in June 2007. His account of the 1953 flood were terrifying.

Mississippi River Flooding 2010 51: Young Man Fishing
More pictures of the flooding from this spring. The river has been at flood stage or above for most of the year.
His mother said he was born with a fishing pole in his hand (ouch!) This is a creek that empties into the Mississippi. It was backing up, too, and the family of this young man was taking advantage of the opportunity to fish in the rising water.
